Soldiers are the guardians of our society. The way their lives have been moulded to serve their country is phenomenal. In actuality, we must sing odes of their dedication for the safety of the nation. Their commitment soars and tugs our emotions every now and then. These courageous men deserve every bit of admiration and applause from all the echelons of the society. Among many such incidents wherein our fearless warriors have lost their precious lives, Kargil War was one such important operation. Today, we salute those brave hearts for whom being wrapped up in tricolours was acceptable but not the defeat at the hands of our enemies. And the very aptly put adage by the Indian Army says it all, "Our flag does not fly because the wind moves it, it flies with the last breath of each soldier who died protecting it."
Let us read about the Operation Vijay which
speaks volumes about the glorious work that our soldiers have done in the year
of 1999.
1. The
day was named after the historic success of Operation Vijay, a mission through
which our brave soldiers captured the high outposts which were earlier lost to
Pakistani intruders.
2. India regained a greater chunk of Kargil in the war though many lives were lost and the war continued for about 60 days.
3. Around 527 Indian Army soldiers lost their
lives in this war. Every year on this particular day, Prime Minister of India
pays tribute to the soldiers at Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate.
4. Since the war ended on 26th July so to
honour the courageous soldiers of our country, 26th July was chosen as the
Kargil Vijay Diwas.
5. A very interesting fact is related to
Kargil War as told by a government contractor, Hussain. He said," Do you
think it would have been possible for to cook langars for the soldiers while
Pakistan was shelling and bombing. No, it was not. Sattu(toasted gram flour)
mixed with ghee and sugar actually won the Kargil War. The locals of Drass and
Kargil region who fought valiantly with Indian Army had sattu in their pockets
to win this important War.
